Through the National Fish Habitat Partnership, we have funded well over 100 on-the-ground science, conservation, restoration, and education projects that are helping to safeguard salmon and ensure they remain a key part of life here in the Mat-Su.
To continue this work, we are preparing for the upcoming FY27 funding cycle, which which following the 2024 reauthorization of the America’s Conservation Enhancement (ACE) Act, brings several exciting administrative changes designed to make our process faster and more accessible.
A More Efficient Timeline. One of the most significant updates is the transition from an 18-month funding cycle to a 12-month cycle. This change aims to shorten the timeline between submitting an application and being able to actually start work on an approved project.
- Application submission period: June to September, 2026
- Funding available: May – August 2027
Increased Match Flexibility and Accessibility. The ACE Act reauthorization also introduces more flexibility regarding match requirements. The 1:1 non-federal match is now evaluated at the Partnership-wide (aggregate) level rather than being a requirement for every individual project.
Although specific guidelines for this year’s call for proposals have not yet been developed by the Mat-Su Salmon Partnership, these recent changes will allow for more flexibility to fund a broader range of projects that benefit Mat-Su salmon.
Additionally, under the ACE Act, Tribal partners remain exempt from non-federal match requirements. 5% of the total national NFHP funding appropriation is also specifically set aside for Tribal-led projects.
Next Steps: The Partnership is currently updating its Strategic Action Plan using the invaluable input many of you provided in the fall. As we move into the FY27 project funding cycle, the Steering Committee aims to incorporate these emerging shared priorities into the RFP process where possible.
Stay tuned for more updates and check back in June 2026 to download the updated guidelines on our Project Funding page.
